Asheville, North Carolina potter Karen Newgard fires at a high temperature in a soda fired kiln. She uses the sgrafitto technique to make her pottery. She starts with an entire black piece, and then carves out the parts that she will leave white to make pictures on her pottery. This vase is 12″ tall and 4 1/2″ in diameter at the narrower top. It has a turquoise liner glaze on the interior and features a blackbird on one side and branches with leaves on the other side.
